La Ballue is a chateau of legends. For eleven centuries it seems to have exercised only one power over men, the power of arousing the passions of its owners.
Created in 1973 by 2 architects of high value, François-Hebert Stevens and Paul Maymont, the gardens present 13 "surprises" for the visitor, a series of theatrical gardens in the baroque or mannerist style of the 16th and 17th centuries. These include a fernery, a water trap, a scented chamber, an open air theatre, a temple of Diane, a maze and many other delights.
