Abbaye aux Dames de Saintes
Founded in 1047 by Geoffrey Martel and his wife, the Benedeictine abbey was the first wommen's community in the region and prestigious until the Revolution, in spite of the War of Religions. Transformed over the years into a hospital, a prison, and then a barracks, it found new life and was strikingly restored thanks to intensense musical and cultural activities.
